Thumb osteoarthritis treatment aims at preventing the further degeneration of the articular cartilage. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the joints. Any joint of the body can be affected including the thumb. Thumb osteoarthritis is more common in women compared to men. Usually, thumb osteoarthritis develops after the age of 40. Thumb osteoarthritis mainly affects the joints at the thumb base, the fleshy part of thumb and near the wrist. However, the trapeziometacarpal joint (also known as first carpometacarpal joint) at the thumb base is the most common joint which is susceptible to degeneration. This also helps to reveal the abnormal range of movements. Crepitus or a creaking sound indicates the rubbing of the bone ends in the joint. X-rays helps to show the extent of joint damage.
